How to play HnefataflUpdated 9 days ago

Hnefatafl (pronounced “nefa-thapl” or “neffa-topple”) is a traditional strategy board game believed to be the inspiration for modern games like chess and backgammon. It is a two-player war game played on an 11×11 board, where one side defends a king and the other side attacks.

Game Overview

  • Board Size: 11 × 11 grid

  • Players: 2

  • Pieces:

    • Attacker: 24 dark warriors

    • Defender: 12 light warriors + 1 King

  • Objective:

    • Attacker: Capture the King

    • Defender: Help the King escape to a corner

The pieces are set up in a cross formation, with the King in the center and attackers surrounding the defenders.

How to Play (Step-by-Step Rules)

Follow these steps exactly when playing Hnefatafl:

1. Attacker Goes First

The attacker always takes the first move of the game.

2. Alternate Turns

Players take turns, moving one piece per turn.

3. Movement Rules

Any piece may move any number of spaces in a straight line:

  • Horizontal

  • Vertical

Diagonal movement is not allowed.

4. No Jumping or Passing

Pieces cannot jump over other pieces.
They must move through empty spaces only.

5. King’s Special Tiles

Only the King may stop on marked tiles:

  • The center square

  • The four corner squares

Other pieces may pass through these squares but cannot stop on them.

6. Capturing by Surrounding

A piece is captured if it is surrounded on two opposite sides by enemy pieces.

Example:

  • An enemy piece on the left and right

  • Or on the top and bottom

Once surrounded, the piece is removed from the board.

7. Capturing on Marked Tiles

Warriors may also be captured if they are pinned against a marked tile (center or corner) by an enemy piece.

In this case, the marked tile acts like a blocking piece.

8. No Repeated Moves

No move may be repeated more than three turns in a row.

This rule prevents players from stalling the game.

9. Attacker Victory Condition

The attacker wins if they surround the King on two opposing sides, capturing him.

Once the King is captured, the game ends.

10. Defender Victory Condition

The defender wins if the King reaches any marked corner tile.

If the King lands on a corner, the defender immediately wins.

Strategy Tip

Hnefatafl is a game of balance and planning:

  • Attackers should coordinate to trap the King.

  • Defenders should open escape paths and protect the King.

  • Outnumbered players can still win with smart positioning.

Think ahead, protect your pieces, and control the board. Strategy conquers strength every time.
